Retire in Argentina from Australia: pension and visa

Australians can retire in Argentina on qualifying pensionado temporary residence if their documented regular foreign pension reaches five times Argentina’s monthly SMVM. An existing Australian Age Pension may continue abroad, but its rate can change after 26 weeks and a first claim generally cannot be made from Argentina.

One-year temporary residence, renewable
After 26 weeks
Age Pension rate generally reflects Australian residence years
Healthcare
Medicare does not cover treatment in Argentina

Australians with a qualifying regular foreign pension of at least five times Argentina’s monthly SMVM (statutory minimum wage) can seek one-year renewable pensionado residence. An Australian Age Pension already in payment may continue abroad, but its rate generally changes after 26 weeks according to Australian residence history. Argentina has no social-security agreement with Australia that permits a first Age Pension claim while living there.

Can your pension qualify for Argentine residence?

Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM, Argentina’s immigration authority) asks pensionado applicants to document a regular, permanent pension paid by a government, an international body or a private employer for services performed abroad. Its income threshold is five times the current Salario Mínimo, Vital y Móvil (SMVM). This is an income test, not an immigration charge: the separate Unidad de Medida de Servicios Migratorios (UMSM) prices DNM services. Multiply the SMVM published for the month relevant to your application by five rather than treating a past peso conversion as a standing threshold.

The fact that a payment comes from Australia is not enough. DNM needs evidence of its continuing character and amount, while Services Australia decides whether your payment can be paid abroad and at what rate. If you receive income from owned foreign assets rather than a pension, DNM has a separate rentista route with the same five-SMVM monthly threshold; wages from your own work are not rentista income. For employment-based residence, see the residence-category comparison.

The pensionado authorisation lasts one year and can be renewed. Apply through DNM’s RaDEX (online residence-application system) while in Argentina. Select the category, upload the evidence and pay the generated charges; DNM then emails an appointment for in-person verification. Australian police and pension documents submitted from abroad may need apostilles and Spanish public translations; the police certificate and apostille procedure explains the Australian-document steps. DNM's published fee for an Australian temporary-residence application was 100 UMSM = ARS 100,000 in September 2026 (approximately AUD 94 at the cited September mid-market exchange rate), before any separate platform-generated charges.

Will your Australian Age Pension continue in Argentina?

Services Australia says an Age Pension already in payment can continue indefinitely outside Australia if you remain eligible. At 26 weeks abroad, the rate generally depends on your Australian residence between age 16 and Age Pension age. With 35 years or more, the full base-rate calculation generally continues; fewer years lead to a proportional reduction. Its example uses 10 years to calculate 10/35 of the relevant pension rate. Your income and assets tests still apply; “26 weeks” is not an automatic cancellation date.

Departure can change other parts sooner. If you leave to live overseas, Services Australia says the Energy Supplement and Pension Supplement stop, the Pensioner Concession Card is cancelled and the outside-Australia rate applies from departure. Its rules for a visit are different: the Energy Supplement and card generally end at six weeks, and the Pension Supplement at 12 weeks. Another rule can stop a pension if you returned to Australia to live, claimed there, then left again within two years. For that situation, ask Services Australia about your actual claim and departure dates before booking the move.

If you have not claimed the Age Pension, Argentina is a non-agreement country: Services Australia says you cannot make a first claim from there. Australia's income-tax treaty with Argentina does not create social-security eligibility. Ask Services Australia through its retiring overseas guidance before departure how your payment, rate and claim history will be treated. The separate Australian Age Pension in Argentina guide deals with portability in detail.

Where will a pension be taxed?

Article 18(1) of the Australia–Argentina income-tax treaty says pensions, including government pensions, and annuities paid to a resident of one treaty state are taxable only in that resident state. The phrase “resident” is a treaty tax-residence question, not a description of where you happen to hold a migration card or receive a payment. The treaty allocates income-tax rights; it does not fund healthcare or override Services Australia's eligibility and portability tests.

Argentina's tax agency ARCA says a foreign individual may become an Argentine income-tax resident by obtaining permanent residence or spending 12 months on temporary residence authorisations without it. Australian tax residence follows ATO's separate tests, including the resides and domicile tests; moving overseas does not itself settle them. Argentine income-tax residents are generally taxed on Argentine and foreign income. Ask a cross-border tax adviser to apply the treaty to your tax-residence and payment details. See the Australia–Argentina tax treaty for the scope beyond pensions.

What will healthcare cost after the move?

Australian Medicare does not pay your medical bills in Argentina, and the countries covered by Australia's reciprocal healthcare agreements do not include Argentina. Argentina's amended Migration Law protects access to emergency treatment regardless of migration status, but this does not promise that every phase of care is free. The August 2026 procedure for nationally administered hospitals allows costs after the emergency phase to be billed; routine treatment for people without permanent residence requires insurance or advance payment at those facilities. A provincial or city hospital may apply its own rules.

A prepaga (private health plan) also needs a separate budget from rent and pension income. OSDE publishes plan choices and says the premium depends on plan, age, family circumstances and contribution status; Swiss Medical and Galeno also provide individual plan quotations. Ask for a written quote for your actual age and location, the contracted hospitals and doctors, copayments and eligibility with your current documents. A price for a 30-year-old is not a usable retirement premium. Compare travel cover for the journey and medical evacuation separately; Smartraveller warns that private providers can demand payment before treatment and Australia will not pay your evacuation bill. Argentine health insurance options covers provider questions.

What if you intend to stay permanently?

Pensionado gives temporary, renewable residence. DNM's arraigo route for non-MERCOSUR nationals such as Australians generally requires three years of temporary residence, at least 50% presence during the authorised time and no continuous absence of six months or more. A residencia precaria (provisional certificate while an application is pending) may permit stay and work while valid, but DNU 366/2025 excludes its days from the permanent-residence calculation. Do not schedule a permanent-residence application by counting from the first RaDEX submission.

Common questions

Can an Australian live in Argentina on the Age Pension?

An Australian Age Pension can support a pensionado application if the payment is a qualifying regular foreign pension and documented monthly income meets five SMVM. DNM determines residence eligibility; Services Australia separately determines overseas payment and rate.

Does my Age Pension stop after 26 weeks in Argentina?

No, 26 weeks is generally when Services Australia adjusts the rate for years of Australian residence. An existing payment may continue indefinitely if you remain eligible; a distinct two-year post-claim travel rule can stop payment.

Can I claim the Australian Age Pension for the first time from Argentina?

No, Services Australia says a first claim cannot be made while living in a non-agreement country such as Argentina. An income-tax treaty does not change that social-security rule.

Is Medicare or Argentine public care free for an Australian retiree?

Medicare does not cover you in Argentina. Emergency treatment is protected regardless of status, but national public hospitals can bill subsequent care, and routine care for those without permanent residence at nationally administered facilities requires insurance or advance payment.

What does pensionado residence cost?

The published September 2026 extra-MERCOSUR temporary-residence fee was 100 UMSM, equal to ARS 100,000 (about AUD 94 at the cited September rate). RaDEX may generate separate charges, and the five-SMVM pension threshold is an income requirement, not a fee.
