Argentina digital nomad visa for Australian citizens

Argentina’s digital nomad permission lets eligible Australian passport holders work remotely for employers or clients domiciled outside Argentina for up to 180 days, with the possibility of one renewal for a similar period. You can apply before travelling through the TIE 24H electronic entry procedure, or after lawful entry through an in-person application to Argentina’s Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM, the national immigration authority); the routes have different fees and document steps.

Who can use the digital nomad route

DNM limits this transitory-residence category to citizens of countries exempt from tourist visas who provide remote services to individuals or businesses domiciled abroad. Ordinary Australian-passport holders qualify for tourist visa-free entry, so they can seek this route if their work meets that foreign-client condition. A foreign company’s Argentine office or an Argentine client creates a different question from work for a foreign-domiciled entity; if your engagement crosses that line, ask DNM about the correct category before starting the work.

The digital nomad category is residencia transitoria (transitory residence). It is not the temporary residence counted towards permanent residence under DNM’s three-year arraigo route. DNM’s published nomad guidance does not establish a DNI entitlement or a naturalisation timeline. If you plan to settle rather than work remotely for a finite stay, compare residency for Australians; a temporary-residence category has its own eligibility requirements. If you are visiting without remote work, ordinary Australian tourist entry is a different, shorter route.

How to apply before entry through TIE 24H

TIE 24H (Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica, electronic entry procedure under article 24(h)) is the DNM online route for a digital nomad still outside Argentina. The authorisation is sent by email and must be presented to immigration on arrival. The published pre-entry procedure asks for these steps:

1. Open DNM’s electronic entry procedure for digital nomads before travelling and complete the online application.
2. Upload a JPG of your valid passport and a current photograph in JPG. Attach a signed description of your remote work and a short CV setting out education and work experience.
3. Provide proof that the activity is genuine, such as an employment document, contract, invoice or other evidence of the services provided to foreign-domiciled clients. Include at least one occupational reference.
4. Follow the charge generated for the TIE route. Save the authorisation sent by email and present it at Argentine border control.

TIE 24H is the name of the procedure, not a verified promise that an application is decided within 24 hours. Leave room for processing and any document queries rather than buying travel on the assumption of immediate approval. It is also not the same payment as an in-country DNM admission.

How to apply after arriving in Argentina

DNM’s in-country digital nomad procedure directs applicants to attend in person: in Buenos Aires (CABA), email asesoramiento@migraciones.gov.ar for instructions; outside CABA, attend a regional DNM delegation. Do not use RaDEX for this nomad application. Ask DNM about the appointment and payment sequence for your location.

1. Enter Argentina lawfully on your valid Australian passport and retain your evidence of entry and Argentine address.
2. Prepare the signed account of your independent remote activity, a brief CV and documentary evidence of work for foreign-domiciled employers or clients. DNM also lists at least one occupational reference.
3. Arrange the in-person filing with DNM. Its in-country document list includes proof of domicile and an Argentine criminal-record certificate for applicants older than 16.
4. Pay the charge DNM generates and retain the issued transitory-residence documentation showing the authorised end date.

DNM’s category wording refers to a description of independent work as well as employment and other documentary proof of activity. The foreign-domicile condition still applies to a payroll arrangement or client contract. DNM’s independent-work wording leaves employee cases uncertain; ask DNM whether your arrangement qualifies.

What each procedure costs

DNM lists the following different fee headings in September 2026. Its fee schedule fixes 1 UMSM (Unidad de Medida de Servicios Migratorios, the immigration-service fee unit) at ARS 1,000. Approximate AUD equivalents use Wise’s 29 September 2026 indicative mid-market rate of AUD 1 = ARS 1,066.43, before transfer or card charges.

The consular-unit charge is not ARS 120,000 and the 32-UMSM in-country amount is not the published pre-entry price. DNM generates the charge for the application route used; consult its live fee chart when paying. If your route is TIE, use its payment instructions for the final consular charge rather than converting fee units as though they were pesos.

How the extra 180 days works

An initial grant can run for up to 180 days and DNM provides for renewal for another similar period. Apply for a prórroga (extension) through its nomad-extension procedure while your permission is valid. DNM requests receipts showing income earned from remote services during the authorised period and a criminal-record certificate from your country of origin. Have those records ready before your authorised end date; the extension is an application, not an automatic extra stay.

A year on transitory nomad permission does not turn into permanent residence by elapsed time. For an extra-MERCOSUR applicant such as an Australian, DNM’s arraigo (established-ties) route requires three years of qualifying temporary residence, subject to presence rules. Keep Australian tax separate from the visa

Argentina’s remote-work permission does not decide your Australian tax residency. The ATO applies its own residency tests, including where you live and your Australian ties; holding an Argentine permission or spending a set number of days abroad does not by itself end Australian tax residence. Before taking foreign-based work for an Australian employer, review the Australian tax-residency rules on departure. Argentine tax residency also has separate ARCA criteria, including permanent immigration residence or 12 months on temporary-residence authorisations for foreign individuals; a 180-day nomad grant alone is not the same test.
