Australians can apply for Argentine temporary residence through qualifying income, employment, study, family ties or investment; permanent residence by arraigo normally requires three years of temporary residence. The RaDEX residence charge for an Australian is 100 UMSM (ARS 100,000 under the September 2026 fee schedule).

The short version
- Australian route
- Non-MERCOSUR; three temporary-residence years for arraigo
- Application fee
- 100 UMSM = ARS 100,000 (about AUD 94, September 2026)
- Income routes
- Rentista and pensionado: five SMVM monthly
- Precaria
- Up to 90 days; time does not count towards arraigo
Australians seeking Argentina residency can apply for temporary residence as a rentista, pensionado, worker, student, eligible family member or investor; the route must match the evidence they can actually supply. Since DNU 366/2025, an Australian applying for permanent residence by arraigo generally needs three years of temporary residence, with presence and absence limits; time on a precaria does not count.
Which residence category fits your circumstances?
SMVM means Salario Mínimo, Vital y Móvil (statutory minimum monthly wage). UMSM is a separate unit for migration fees. The income threshold below uses SMVM, not a fixed peso amount.
| Route, September 2026 | Evidence that matters | Published residence / limit |
|---|---|---|
| Rentista | Passive income from owned assets abroad, at least five SMVM per month; documented source and transfers through BCRA-authorised channels. Salary for your own work does not qualify as rentista income. | Temporary, one year, renewable; not a route to Argentine employment. |
| Pensionado | Regular, permanent foreign pension of at least five SMVM per month; document the paying body and amount. | Temporary, one year, renewable; not a route to Argentine employment. |
| Worker (trabajador migrante) | Signed precontract describing role, hours and pay, employer CUIT (tax ID), employer ARCA and Registro Único de Requirentes de Extranjeros registration. | Temporary, one year, renewable; employer-based. |
| Student | Electronic enrolment certificate from a registered institution for recognised full-course study. | Temporary, one year, renewable. |
| Family reunification | Marriage or birth document linking you to an Argentine citizen or eligible temporary/permanent resident, plus sponsor identification. | Temporary: up to three years with Argentine or permanent-resident sponsor, or limited to temporary sponsor's authorised term; renewable. |
| Investor (inversionista) | Own assets contributed to an activity of interest to Argentina; a property purchase by itself is not proof of eligibility. | Temporary, potentially up to three years, renewable under Migration Law art. 23(d). |
| Arraigo (permanent residence) | For an Australian: three years of temporary residence, sufficient means, presence for at least 50% of the authorised period and no absence lasting six months or more. | Apply for a change to permanent residence; qualification does not make it automatic. |
An Australian passport does not make its holder a MERCOSUR national. DNU 366/2025 also changed family reunification: marriage to an Argentine citizen can support temporary residence, but is not immediate permanent residence or automatic citizenship. A child of an Argentine parent may have a separate nationality-by-option route; moving with an Argentine partner addresses the documents for a family application.
If you are evaluating an investor route involving real estate, browse homes for sale in Argentina on PlataPlace separately from the migration decision. DNU 366/2025 introduced a separate naturalisation-by-relevant-investment provision. Buying property alone does not grant residence or citizenship.
How do you apply through RaDEX?
The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM, Argentina's immigration authority) uses RaDEX for these in-country temporary and permanent residence applications. Prepare the documents for your chosen category before filing. If you lived in another country for more than a year during the previous three years, an Australian police certificate alone will not cover that period.
- Be physically in Argentina with lawful entry. Create a user account at RaDEX and select the residence category matching your evidence.
- Complete the category form and pay the charges generated by the platform. The published extra-MERCOSUR temporary/permanent residence fee is 100 UMSM, or ARS 100,000 under the September 2026 schedule (approximately AUD 94 at the cited September AUD/ARS mid-market rate); other charges can be generated for your case.
- Upload your passport, Argentine address and entry evidence, and category documents. For applicants over 16, DNM generally requires Argentine criminal-history checks and certificates for countries where they lived more than one year during the previous three years; the Argentine check is normally integrated into RaDEX.
- Follow the appointment notice sent by email and attend in person so DNM can inspect the application and originals. Keep the email address used for filing accessible throughout the process.
Australian records used abroad can be apostilled by DFAT, including qualifying registry birth certificates and National Police Checks. DNM requires non-Spanish originals translated by an authorised Argentine public translator with the translation legalised by the relevant translators' college. A birth certificate is especially important to a family-link claim, but is not a blanket requirement for every adult route. The Australian police-check and apostille steps cover preparation before departure.

When does temporary residence become permanent?
For an extra-MERCOSUR Australian, DNM's arraigo route requires three years of temporary residence, at least 50% physical presence during the authorised term and no single absence of six months or more. An absence lasting six months or longer can also trigger cancellation of temporary residence under the amended Migration Law unless an exception or DNM authorisation applies. Keep your residence dates distinct from days spent visiting as a tourist.
A residencia precaria (provisional certificate) issued while an application is pending may be valid for up to 90 calendar days and renewed by DNM. While valid, it permits lawful stay, work, study and exit/re-entry; DNU 366/2025 expressly excludes precaria time from both arraigo and naturalisation residence calculations. Filing the application and receiving precaria therefore do not start a three-year arraigo clock. If an overseas absence threatens your status, contact DNM through its permanent-residence service before you travel.
Citizenship follows a separate test. Since DNU 366/2025, the ordinary naturalisation provision asks for two immediately preceding years of lawful, continuous residence without an exit abroad, with an application to DNM. The three-year arraigo test and two-year citizenship test are different rules: neither a tourist stay nor a precaria supplies time for either. Argentine citizenship for Australians covers nationality and the Australian-passport side.
What changes if you are not applying for residence?
Australian tourists generally enter visa-free for up to 90 days, but tourist entry is not permission to take a local job. The digital nomad authorisation is transitory permission for remote services to clients or employers domiciled outside Argentina, not the temporary residence category in the table. It can run up to 180 days and be renewed once for a similar period; the in-country nomad procedure is not RaDEX. See Argentina's digital nomad authorisation if your income is for remote work rather than passive assets.
After residence is granted, the first foreign-resident DNI (national identity card) is a separate RENAPER/Registro Civil process. The DNI application follows, rather than replaces, the residence filing.
Common questions
Can an Australian obtain permanent residence by marrying an Argentine?
Marriage can support a temporary family-reunification application, not automatic permanent residence. DNM asks for legalised proof of the family relationship and the sponsor’s ID; the eventual permanent route has its own criteria.
Does rent from overseas property qualify for rentista?
Income from owned foreign property may qualify if it is passive, reaches five SMVM monthly and is documented as DNM requires. Salary or freelance pay for your own work is not rentista income.
Can I work while I have a residencia precaria?
A valid residencia precaria permits work and study under DNU 366/2025. Its validity may be up to 90 days and renewed, but those days do not count towards permanent residence by arraigo.
How much does an Australian pay for a RaDEX residency application?
The published extra-MERCOSUR residence fee is 100 UMSM, equal to ARS 100,000 (about AUD 94 at the September 2026 cited mid-market rate). Pay the platform-generated invoice; separate charges may apply.
Does an investment in a flat grant Argentine residence?
A flat purchase alone does not establish investor residence. The law describes investment of your own assets in an activity of interest to Argentina, and DNU 366/2025 treats investment naturalisation separately.
