Medicare when you leave Australia for Argentina
Medicare does not cover treatment while you are in Argentina. Argentina is not among Australia's reciprocal healthcare agreement countries, so arrange medical and evacuation cover before you leave.

The short version
- Medicare abroad
- No cover for treatment outside Australia, including Argentina
- Reciprocal agreement
- Argentina is not one of Australia's 11 agreement countries
- Medical emergency
- Call 107 in Argentina; 911 is another emergency number
- National public hospitals
- Rules for non-emergency care changed in August 2026
Medicare does not pay for your medical care while you are in Argentina. Australia has reciprocal healthcare agreements with 11 countries, but Argentina is not one of them; arrange suitable travel medical insurance before departure and local healthcare cover if you are settling there.
What happens to Medicare cover overseas
Your Australian Medicare card is not a payment method for an Argentine doctor, hospital or pharmacy. Services Australia says Medicare does not cover you while overseas. Australia's reciprocal agreements provide limited care for eligible visitors to specified countries; they are not worldwide cover for Australian citizens, and there is no agreement with Argentina. The Australia–Argentina income-tax treaty does not change this: it concerns income tax, not healthcare.
Overseas treatment rules do not, by themselves, establish whether you remain enrolled or eligible for Medicare treatment on a return to Australia. For a return visit, make eligibility and enrolment enquiries through Services Australia rather than presenting an Australian card in Argentina and expecting reimbursement.
What to arrange before flying
- Buy travel insurance that includes medical treatment and evacuation for Argentina and every transit country on your itinerary. Smartraveller's Argentina advice warns that private facilities may require cash before treatment and the Australian Government will not pay medical or evacuation bills.
- Read the policy's period of cover and exclusions before paying. Check pre-existing conditions, activities such as skiing or motorcycling, and whether a move rather than a short holiday affects eligibility. Keep the insurer's emergency-assistance contact accessible offline.
- If you intend to live in Argentina, compare an Argentine prepaga (private health plan) for ongoing appointments and hospital access. A local plan's provider network does not automatically include an international medical evacuation. Use the Argentina health insurance guide to compare the plan, provider network and application requirements.
Travel insurance covers costs only within its policy terms; an Argentine prepaga provides care within its provider network. Ask for written start and end dates so you do not leave a gap between policies.
What care an uninsured newcomer can use in Argentina
Emergency treatment cannot be delayed for an immigration-status or payment check under Argentina's amended migration law. That does not make all subsequent care free: the national Health Ministry says treatment after the emergency phase may be billed. Call 107 for a medical emergency; 911 is another emergency number.
For facilities run by Argentina's national government, the procedure in force since August 2026 requires insurance or advance payment for habitual, non-emergency treatment by people without permanent residency. Permanent foreign residents have access to public care on the same basis as Argentine citizens. Provincial and municipal facilities can follow their own administration and charging rules, so the national rule is not a promise about every hospital in Buenos Aires. See hospitals in Buenos Aires for where to seek care and what to ask before attending.
In a non-urgent situation, ask the hospital about your insurance arrangement and likely charges before the appointment. For an emergency, seek treatment first. The Argentina residency guide covers the separate immigration application.
What if you are already receiving an Australian payment?
Medicare cover overseas and Australian social-security payments are different questions. Services Australia says some payments can stop when you live abroad; the rules for an existing Age Pension are separate and may permit continued payment subject to eligibility. An income-tax treaty with Argentina does not create a reciprocal Medicare entitlement or a social-security agreement. If a payment forms part of your moving budget, read the Australian Age Pension in Argentina guide before departure.
Common questions
Does Medicare cover me in Argentina if I am still an Australian citizen?
No. Medicare does not cover treatment overseas; Australian citizenship alone does not give you an Argentine healthcare entitlement.
Is there a reciprocal healthcare agreement between Australia and Argentina?
No. Argentina is absent from Australia's list of 11 reciprocal healthcare agreement countries.
Are emergency visits to a public hospital free for Australians?
Emergency care must not be delayed by immigration or payment formalities, but costs after the emergency phase can be billed. The national rules for routine care and local hospital rules need separate consideration.
Should I buy travel insurance or an Argentine prepaga?
Buy travel cover for the journey and medical evacuation, then compare a prepaga for ongoing care if you are settling in Argentina. Check the coverage dates so neither policy leaves a gap.
Does moving to Argentina cancel my Medicare card?
The absence of overseas Medicare cover does not itself establish that your Australian Medicare enrolment has been cancelled. Services Australia handles your eligibility and enrolment for care in Australia.
