Argentina student visa for Australians: study residence

An Australian enrolling in an officially recognised full course can apply for one-year renewable student temporary residence in Argentina, provided a registered institution supplies the electronic enrolment certificate Migraciones requires. A Spanish-school booking alone does not establish that eligibility: the school's registration, the course's recognition and the type of enrolment determine the route.

Which study route fits the course?

Migraciones' student temporary residence covers regular students in officially recognised secondary, tertiary, university, postgraduate or specialised full-course study at a recognised public or private institution. Its instructions also identify distinct arrangements for interns and research scholarship holders. Ask the admissions office for the exact Migraciones category and its constancia de inscripción electrónica (electronic enrolment certificate) before making a non-refundable enrolment payment. The institution must be registered with Migraciones and the certificate must state the type of study.

A school selling Spanish lessons may not offer recognised full-course enrolment or the required electronic filing. An Australian may visit visa-free as a tourist for up to 90 days for an ordinary short trip; tourist entry is not permission to start local paid work or an automatic path to student residence. Argentina's Foreign Ministry separately publishes a consular page titled ‘Student visa – 365 days’, whose text describes study for a period less than 365 days. This application is made personally at the Argentine consular office for the student's place of residence and includes the study program, the institution's electronic student filing and its RENURE (National Registry of Petitioners on behalf of Foreign Applicants) registration number. What documents does Migraciones ask for?

For an in-country student temporary-residence filing, have these ready:

1. A valid Australian passport and proof of lawful entry and Argentine address.
2. The institution's electronic enrolment certificate for the recognised course; have the school specify the course and confirm its Migraciones registration.
3. An Argentine criminal-record certificate if you are older than 16. It is normally integrated into RaDEX.
4. Overseas police documentation if you are older than 16 and lived for more than one year in another country during the previous three years. An AFP check does not replace records from any other country in that history.
5. Apostille or Argentine consular legalisation for foreign-issued documents. Non-Spanish documents need a translation by an Argentine public translator and legalisation of that translation by the translators' college. Minors have additional parental-authorisation, birth-record and local-tutor requirements. A consular filing has its own list: the Foreign Ministry asks, among other items, for a passport valid for six months on entry with two blank pages, two 4 × 4 cm photographs, proof of funds, the study program and an interview. Its police-certificate requirement applies to applicants aged 16 or over staying more than six months, with the stated three-year residence history. Submit documents under the route you actually use rather than combining both lists into an invented universal checklist.

How to file and what you pay

For student temporary residence, be inside Argentina and start at RaDEX. Create an account, complete the student form, pay the platform-generated charges and attach the documents. Migraciones then emails an appointment for in-person verification if the submission is ready to formalise. The published extra-MERCOSUR temporary-residence fee for Australians is 100 UMSM, with 1 UMSM set at ARS 1,000 on the September 2026 schedule. Additional platform charges can appear; use the invoice RaDEX generates. A pending qualifying application may yield a residencia precaria (provisional residence certificate), valid for up to 90 calendar days and renewable by Migraciones; it is not a final grant.

If applying at a consulate, contact the appropriate Argentine consular office for an appointment and its payment instructions rather than starting RaDEX overseas. The Foreign Ministry says consular applicants present originals and copies; complying with its list does not guarantee a grant. Can a public university charge an Australian student?

DNU 366/2025 permits Argentine public universities to charge foreign students without permanent residence. It does not require every university to charge or set a national tuition price. Student residence does not grant permanent residence. Request the university's written fee schedule for the named degree and your actual immigration status before committing to the course. A private institution sets its own tuition separately. Ask whether the university will produce the Migraciones electronic enrolment certificate; an acceptance email is not enough.

Student residence, once granted, has a one-year term and may be renewed. The provisional precaria period does not count towards permanent-residence arraigo or naturalisation. Keep the academic registration active and follow the actual grant and renewal dates printed by Migraciones, not an assumed path from enrolment to permanent status.
