Driving in Argentina with an Australian licence

Australians on a short visit can drive in Argentina with a current physical Australian licence; an International Driving Permit (IDP) may also be required by the hire company. Argentina drives on the right, and Australians who become residents need an Argentine licence rather than assuming their Australian licence converts automatically.

What do I carry to drive on a short visit?

Smartraveller says to carry your physical Australian driver licence and warns that a digital licence may not be accepted. Ask the rental company before paying whether it wants an IDP as well. The IDP is a translation and supplement: keep the original Australian licence with it, because the booklet alone is not a driving licence. Only the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) and its state and territory motoring-club members are authorised to distribute Australian IDPs. Arrange one through an authorised member before departure rather than buying an imitation “international licence” online. How should an Australian prepare for Argentine roads?

Drive on the right and give extra attention to turns after stopping, overtaking and the first junction after leaving a car park: the side change is most easily forgotten when the road is quiet. Smartraveller warns of drivers running red lights, vehicles not yielding at crossings, motorcycles in blind spots and aggressive driving.
