International schools in Buenos Aires for Australians

Buenos Aires city public schools run an early-year to December calendar; in 2026, primary classes began on 25 February, secondary on 2 March, and all levels finish on 18 December. Australian families arriving from overseas can apply through the city's public-school enrolment system, including when a child has not yet received an Argentine DNI (national identity card). City education calendar and school enrolment set out the dates and route.

The school calendar is the first question to settle. Lincoln, a private international school in La Lucila, follows an August-to-June year. NORTHLANDS describes a February-to-December year. A child transferring from an Australian January-to-December school year may therefore enter at a different point in each school's curriculum.

When does the Buenos Aires school year start?

For Buenos Aires city public schools, the 2026 winter break was 20–31 July and classes end on 18 December. The 2027 calendar needs its own city schedule; do not plan a start date from the previous year's timetable. Private schools set their own dates. NORTHLANDS describes a February start, a July winter break and a December end on its admissions page. Lincoln's academic program divides the year into August–December and February–June semesters.

That difference matters for an August move: it is a midyear arrival for a city school but the beginning of Lincoln's school year. Ask the admissions office which year group a student would enter using the child's most recent Australian report, rather than converting a grade by age alone. Buenos Aires city's secondary-school transfer process examines the classes already completed, including the year, subjects and qualifications recorded by the previous school.

Which bilingual and international schools offer the IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has several programs. Ask which program applies to the child's actual age and year level; an IB Diploma in the final school years says little about the primary curriculum. These are schools that describe their own programs, not a ranking or an indication that places are available.

Lincoln's IB page identifies the Diploma years; NORTHLANDS' international programs identify its IB and Cambridge offerings. La Lucila is outside the City of Buenos Aires; distinguish a school's metropolitan address from a CABA public-school catchment or enrolment procedure. Lincoln accepts applications throughout the year. Its 2026/27 tuition policy says tuition is billed monthly, but a family enrolling or leaving mid-semester is charged for the full semester. Discuss the proposed entry date and written payment terms before accepting a place. NORTHLANDS asks families living abroad to submit their admissions form, school reports and required papers before arranging a visit or virtual meeting; its admissions office requests at least two weeks' lead time for that meeting. Admission is handled by the school, separately from city public-school allocation.

Can an Australian child attend a public school without a DNI?

Yes. Argentina's Education Law, article 143, requires access and continued schooling in preschool, primary and secondary education for migrant children without a DNI when they present identity documents issued by their country of origin. Migration Law, article 7, bars exclusion from these levels on the basis of irregular immigration status. A child's lack of a DNI is therefore a documentation issue to resolve with the school, not a reason to delay the application.

This legal right does not assign a particular school. The city's online system allocates public-school places; the 2027 pre-enrolment page says documentary review is part of the process, and an incomplete application is not considered for allocation. If a requested school lacks a place, follow the city's available-place and help channels rather than assuming a named school's offer. How do you apply for a city public-school place?

The city's 2027 enrolment page covers pupils entering city-managed public schools for the first time or changing education level, including those arriving from schools abroad. For the 2027 school year, it lists pre-enrolment from 5 October to 6 November 2026, document review from 5 October to 13 November, and online place results from 4 December 2026. Those dates belong to the 2027 intake, not every future intake.

1. Decide whether the child is applying for preschool, primary or secondary, and gather their identity document and recent school reports.
2. Use the city's online enrolment instructions during the intake window. Include that the child is arriving from abroad.
3. Complete the documentary review by the published deadline. The city says unfinished pre-enrolments are not considered for allocation.
4. View the allocation result on the city platform. For help, the city lists its 147 education line and in-person assistance points on the same enrolment page.

For entry during the current school year, the same city page directs families to Boti, its WhatsApp assistant, and the message ‘Inscripción escolar’. A move after the main intake therefore has a specific route. Planning the first weeks after arrival around that contact is more useful than waiting for the next October intake.

Which Australian school documents should you bring?

Bring the child's passport and a school-issued record of completed years and subjects. For transfers into city public secondary schools, the city's international mobility process accepts a DNI, identity card or passport. It asks for a signed or stamped record showing the previous curriculum, school year, completed subjects and outstanding subjects. Records from an English-language school must be translated in Argentina by a traductor público nacional (authorised public translator). This process applies to entry into city-managed secondary schools; private schools run their own admissions assessments.

Ask the receiving school which Australian civil and academic records it requires before obtaining apostilles.
