Send money from Australia to Argentina: compare the payout
For AUD 1,000, Wise’s 29 September 2026 mid-market quote implies ARS 1,066,430 before fees; it does not establish a Wise payout. Compare a fully specified net ARS quote from each transfer service before sending.

To send money from Australia to Argentina, compare the net pesos the recipient can use for the same AUD amount, funding method and delivery route. At Wise’s 29 September 2026 mid-market quote of AUD 1 = ARS 1,066.43, AUD 1,000 converts to ARS 1,066,430 before any fees; that is a calculation, not a transfer offer.
What would AUD 1,000 actually deliver?
The September 2026 mid-market conversion is a benchmark, not a Wise or Western Union payout quote. Wise charges a stated transfer fee; Western Union says it may charge a transfer fee and earns money on currency exchange. Compare the final peso payout rather than a zero-fee promotion.
| Route for AUD 1,000, 29 September 2026 benchmark | ARS figure you can calculate from the dated evidence | Net pesos to compare at checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-market benchmark, not a service | 1,000 × 1,066.43 = ARS 1,066,430 | Not a payout; it excludes all charges |
| Wise AUD → ARS bank transfer | Mid-market benchmark: ARS 1,066,430 before Wise’s transfer fee, if the displayed rate remains unchanged | The exact ARS receipt shown after entering AUD 1,000, payment method and recipient |
| Western Union | No verified AUD 1,000 transfer-rate or fee quote for this route | The displayed ARS payout after both transfer fee and currency margin, for the actual payment and collection methods |
| Australian card used for purchases | No verified AUD 1,000 → ARS purchase settlement; a card is not a transfer to a local bank | Actual AUD statement cost for the ARS purchase, including issuer charges |
| Buy USD notes in Australia, then convert in Argentina | No verified AUD → USD cash purchase quote or peso payout | Actual pesos received after both exchanges and cash-handling costs |
| AUD → USDT → ARS | No verified two-leg AUD 1,000 quote | ARS withdrawn after trading, network, counterparty and withdrawal costs |
The first row is a useful ceiling only for a conversion at that particular mid-market rate with no costs. It is not a universal ceiling on other providers: their execution time and currency route can produce a different rate. If a provider’s fee is charged in AUD before conversion, subtract that fee from AUD 1,000 and multiply the remaining AUD by its quoted ARS-per-AUD rate; if it deducts pesos later, subtract the peso charge instead. Use the provider’s final net figure rather than inventing either fee.
How do I compare Wise and Western Union?
- Enter AUD 1,000 into both calculators on the same day. Select the payment method you will actually use rather than comparing a bank-funded Wise transfer with a card-funded Western Union transfer.
- Specify the same practical destination: a peso bank account where both services offer one, or label a Western Union cash-collection quote as a different delivery product. Record the exchange rate, AUD amount debited, fee, ARS amount available and estimated arrival time at the final review screen before authorising payment.
- Compare net ARS available ÷ AUD actually debited. A fee added on top of the AUD 1,000 means the denominator is larger than 1,000. If pickup is involved, ask the chosen location about opening and available cash before relying on the quoted collection option.
Wise says an ARS bank recipient needs a full name, address, 22-digit CBU (bank account identifier) and 11-digit CUIT/CUIL (tax or employment identifier). Its stated ceiling is USD 18,000 equivalent in ARS both per transfer and per month, and it does not currently support sending ARS out. An Argentine wallet CVU is a different identifier from a bank CBU; do not enter one in the other field. For identity and account-opening routes, see opening an Argentine bank account.
Western Union’s Australian fee guidance says the transfer charge varies with payment and delivery method and it may earn from FX conversion. Before relying on cash pickup, confirm your eligibility and ID requirements with Western Union, then check the chosen location's opening hours and available cash. A displayed pickup quote does not guarantee that location can pay it. Wise’s page also shows an isolated “AUD 201.02 total fees” without the transaction amount: that is not the fee for this AUD 1,000 example.
When is a card or USD cash a better funding route?
An Australian-issued Visa can be a practical way to pay a merchant, rather than moving money into your own peso bank account. Visa says qualifying foreign-issued card purchases automatically receive a preferential tourist conversion a little below the financial-dollar or MEP rate; the Australian card issuer can still add charges. Visa’s Australian exchange-rate calculator can help you inspect the network rate, but the settled statement cost and the ARS amount on the receipt give the useful after-fees comparison. An ATM withdrawal is not a card purchase, so do not assume the same conversion applies. For the mechanics of those rates, read Argentina’s exchange rates explained.
If a payment terminal asks whether to bill in AUD or ARS, choosing AUD accepts dynamic currency conversion at the displayed provider rate and possible markup. Visa says you may decline that conversion without cancelling the transaction. Compare its offered rate with your card terms; normally choose ARS so the card network and issuer convert it.
Cash has two exchange legs: AUD for USD notes before departure, then USD for ARS in Argentina. Without the Australian cash-sale price, a local buy quote and the amount of USD actually exchanged, a favourable-looking Argentine dollar quote cannot establish a better AUD 1,000 outcome. The 29 September 2026 informal blue USD-buy quotation was ARS 1,545, whereas its USD-sale quotation was ARS 1,565; a customer handing over USD would be looking at the buy side, before a particular counterparty’s terms. An informal quote is neither a guaranteed transaction nor a recommendation to use an unlicensed exchange.
For larger amounts carried physically, AUSTRAC requires a declaration of AUD 10,000 or more, including an equivalent amount of other currencies, when entering or leaving Australia. Argentina’s ARCA sets a distinct USD 10,000 cash threshold: amounts below it may be brought in or out; higher inward amounts require Customs declaration OM 2249A and higher outward sums must go by bank transfer. Those thresholds use different currencies and must not be treated as the same limit.
Does USDT solve the transfer problem?
USDT adds at least two priced transactions: an AUD purchase of tokens and an ARS sale or withdrawal. Count deposit charges, trading spreads, network fees, peso withdrawal costs and counterparty risk before comparing its net ARS against a bank transfer. Argentina’s securities regulator CNV publishes a register of virtual-asset service providers (PSAVs), but a listing does not guarantee a stablecoin’s value, a platform’s solvency or onboarding for a foreign newcomer. Do not treat a USDT route as cheaper without a complete AUD 1,000-to-ARS quote, including withdrawal costs; tax treatment depends on your circumstances.
If the money will support a longer move, use the first-weeks arrival checklist to prepare account documents. Confirm that the named recipient can use the chosen payout route before sending.
Common questions
How many pesos will Wise send for AUD 1,000?
ARS 1,066,430 is the pre-fee mid-market calculation from 29 September 2026, not the Wise payout. Enter AUD 1,000, payment method and recipient details in Wise to see the current net ARS amount.
Is a zero-fee Western Union transfer cheaper than Wise?
A zero transfer fee does not establish a cheaper payout because Western Union can also earn a currency-exchange margin. Compare the final ARS payout against the total AUD debited for the same delivery method.
Can Wise transfer Argentine pesos back to Australia?
Wise’s ARS help page said ARS could not currently be sent out through Wise when checked on 29 September 2026. Its AUD-to-ARS service supports local bank recipients subject to published details and limits.
Can I use an Australian card instead of a money transfer?
An Australian-issued Visa can pay for purchases under Visa’s foreign-card tourist-rate scheme, but it does not credit your Argentine bank account. Merchant purchases and ATM withdrawals also have different rate and fee rules.
Do I need to declare USD cash when flying from Australia?
Australian physical-cash reporting starts at AUD 10,000 or equivalent in foreign currency, including USD. Argentina applies its separate USD 10,000 Customs threshold; larger inbound amounts require declaration and higher outbound sums must go by bank transfer.
